International Bridges to Justice (IBJ) (国际司法桥梁) supports the continued development of China’s criminal justice system and promotes increased awareness of the rights of accused persons. Working in partnership with the Ministry of Justice’s National Legal Aid program, leading universities and bar associations, IBJ provides practical training, material support and technical assistance to defense lawyers and others working within the justice community. IBJ’s programming strengthens the capacity of China’s rapidly expanding indigent criminal defense systems as well as the quality of the defense bar. IBJ is a non-governmental, non-profit organization based in Geneva, Switzerland.

Currently IBJ is seeking a Chinese national for the position of Legal Assistant, to be based in IBJ’s Beijing Office in Haidian District. The legal assistant will report to the English-speaking lawyers and Program Coordinator.

Primary Responsibilities:
• Support programming and project activities
• Translate documents and interpret at trainings and meetings (both English-to-Chinese and Chinese-to-English)
• Coordinate with partners and maintain relationships
• Conduct legal research and write reports on ongoing and developing trends within the criminal justice field
• Provide other administrative and logistical support

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in law
• Excellent command of written and spoken English; previous experience in translation and interpretation preferred
• Interest in criminal defense and/or legal aid; commitment to public interest
• Knowledge of Chinese legal system, especially in substantive and procedural criminal law
• Previous experience in an international organization preferred
• Willingness to travel, both within China and abroad
• Details-oriented, able to manage multiple tasks on tight deadlines
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications

This is a full-time position. We would prefer someone who can stay for 2+ years. Competitive compensation will be offered.
